40 Years ago today, Eagle touched down on the Moon’s surface, and humans first walked on extra-terrestrial soil. The space program has been among the most important endeavors of the last century, responsible for much of the technology we take for granted today. A minor, but relevant example can be seen in the sensors in modern digital cameras which benefitted from years of astronomical imaging development, including that for the sensor in the Hubble Space Telescope.
Gibbous Moon — Reflex-Nikkor C 500mm f/8 handheld
In tribute to those who made the moon landing possible, here is the Moon as seen from Earth, not as Armstrong, Aldrin, and only 10 others have seen it.
3 more photos from yesterday’s excursion with the cheap ultra-tele. I’ll probably post the actual review on Tuesday or Wednesday.
I went out this morning with my trusty old Reflex-Nikkor C 500mm f/8 to take some photos for the review I plan to write within the next week. It turned out to be a wonderful morning, so here’s just a couple of the photos I’ll be using in the review to whet your appetite.
Light Doughnuts and Ducklings
This mother was keeping her ducklings on a small platform sticking out in the middle of the conservatory pond. I have to say the reflection of the sun in water is probably the situation in which the donut boke of reflex lenses looks best.
Black Crowned Night Heron
This guy let me get surprisingly close to him. It was difficult to choose which photo to use in this post, and I have several more I’ll have to choose between for the final review.
Going through some more old rolls of film, this was taken at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden at the same time as that posting in April. Like the ones in my last post it was with my Nikon FE and Fuji Reala 100. The composition isn’t perfect, but I do like the lighting.
Sakura — 35mm f/2 AIS

St. Marks Pl. is one of my favorite places in the city, yet somehow I hadn’t gotten around to trying Baoguette until about a month ago. The Bánh mì was delicious, though I would have liked it spicier.
Counter
Nikon FE, Fuji Reala 100, Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 AI'D
I rather like the color and pose of this shot. For once, I got decent colors out of scanned negatives. 35mm color negatives do rather leave something to be desired in terms of resolution, especially after scanning. Still, you could easily print this at over 10”.
A Sloppy Bao
Nikon FE, Fuji Reala 100, Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 AI'D
This was my meal, a sloppy bao. I’ve since had the eponymous baoguette, which was also quite good.
